Day 2: Hanoi - Halong Bay This morning we join local people paying their respects to President Ho Chi Minh in his Mausoleum, before exploring his former home, the House of Stilts and the One Pillar Pagoda. Then sit back and enjoy your first view of the northern countryside as we drive to Halong Bay, stopping for lunch on the way. (B/L/D) Day 3: Halong Bay - Hanoi Sail one of the world’s greatest natural wonders. This mesmerizing seascape of thousands of limestone islands rising mystically from the water is filled with caves and grottos to explore. Lunch is onboard. Seafood, naturally. Then it’s back to Hanoi to enjoy the city by night. (B/L/D) Day 4: Hanoi Tune into your inner culture vulture with a visit to the Temple of Literature and Fine Art Museum in the morning. The afternoon is free. You could head to the lively Old Quarter to shop, or sip sweet Vietnamese coffee while watching the world go by. (B/L/D) Day 6: Hue - Hoi An There’s so much to see as we cruise down the Perfume River to the iconic Thien Mu pagoda before visiting the vast and ornate tombs of Vietnam’s last imperial dynasties, Emperors Minh Mang, Khai Dinh and Tu Duc, with its intricate porcelain decorations. This afternoon we take a scenic drive over the stunning Hai Van Pass to Hoi An, visiting China Beach and Marble Mountain on the way. (B/L) Day 7: Hoi An Once a thriving river port, historic Hoi An will charm you as we get to know its narrow streets, and explore ancient merchant houses, temples and covered Japanese bridges. It’s a free afternoon. Order something special from the local tailors. Or head to the beach; it’s just a bike or taxi ride away. (B/L) Day 8: Hoi An - Danang – HCMC Use this morning to do any last minute things around town before we head to Danang to fl y to Ho Chi Minh City and our first dinner in this modern and vividly chaotic city. (B/L/D) Day 9: HCMC - Cu Chi Tunnels This morning we drive out to the famous Cu Chi Tunnels – so don’t eat too much breakfast. We’ll explore a section of this amazing underground network of tunnels that stretched for hundreds of kilometres. Back in town recent history is recalled at the War Remnants Museum and Reunification Palace before some serious retail therapy. (B/L) Day 10: HCMC - My Tho We make our way through the lush countryside of the Mekong Delta, aka the ‘rice bowl’, to My Tho. Cruise waterways, stopping at abundant orchards to taste exotic fruits and delicious honey. The afternoon’s free back in town. (B/L) Day 11: Hanoi - Ninh Binh From Tam Coc we cruise downstream in small boats through magnificent tunnels and caves in this stunning landscape known as Halong Bay on rice paddies. The view from a pagoda built into a cliff face is a must for your camera. At Hoa Lu we visit temples from the Dinh and Le dynasties before returning to lively Hanoi. (B/L) Day 12: Hanoi Make your own way today. This city of wide boulevards and restful lakes is full of hidden treasures. The bustling Old Quarter is also a must. (B) Day 13: Hanoi - Luang Prabang This morning we fl y to the former royal town of Luang Prabang via Vientiane. Once our local guide has settled you into your hotel the rest of the day is free to get into the languid pace. Meet the local hill tribe people selling their wares at the market or try your first Lao coffee – perhaps at a little French patisserie. (B/D) Day 14: Luang Prabang After visiting the former Royal Palace on the river, we start exploring this wonderland of gilded wats at Wat Xieng Thong, Wat Ami and Wat Visoun. In the afternoon a short boat ride down the Mekong takes you to Pak Ou caves, filled with hundreds of Buddha statues. Back in town, take in the sunset panorama from Mount Phousi. (B/L) Day 15: Luang Prabang This is a great place to chill out so nothing’s planned for today. You may want to step out at dawn to see the monks receiving alms, or organise a ride out to the Kuang Si falls. (B) Day 16: Luang Prabang - Vientiane A free morning before your flight to friendly Vientiane. We tour the golden splendour of Wat Phat That Luang, as well as Wat Haw Phra Kaew and the oldest temple, Wat Si Saket. Patouxai, the Laos version of an Arc de Triomphe, is also on the agenda. The rest of the day is free. Head down to the Mekong for a Beer Lao at sunset. (B/L/D) Day 17: Vientiane - Phnom Penh After flying to Phnom Penh, our guide will meet you and take you to your hotel. After lunch we visit the Royal Palace, the shimmering Silver Pagoda and the National Museum. Then view the city from the Mekong on a river cruise. (B/L/D) Day 18: Phnom Penh - Siem Reap You'll fly to Siem Reap, gateway to the amazing temples of Angkor, and should be in your hotel in time for lunch. Visit 200 km underground tunnel of Cuchi, known as the land of steel hearts and a firm resistance base, the land of fire and roses. Cuchi is famous for a secret tunnels system which is hundreds of kilometers long deep inside the earth. Return to Saigon. After lunch visit the War Crime Museum, Unification Hall and local shopping.
